Revealed: Our Penguin Sculpture for Waddle-On-Sea Art Trail
Unity in Community’s is delighted to officially reveal its vibrant contribution to the highly anticipated Waddle-On-Sea public art exhibition, which launched overnight to much excitement across the community.
We have once again teamed up with local artist Neil Fendell, who previously designed our popular hare sculpture for the Hares About Town trail in 2021. This year’s creation, titled ‘Sunny Southpole-on-Sea’, brings the spirit of Southend alive in penguin form, showcasing colorful scenes and landmarks from around the town.
The Waddle-On-Sea trail, running through to September 3rd, features 31 large penguins and 72 baby sculptures scattered across Southend-on-Sea and Leigh-on-Sea. Each sculpture has been uniquely decorated and offers a fun and free day out for families, with interactive maps guiding visitors through the trail.
All of the large penguins have been sponsored by local businesses and will be auctioned off at the end of the event to raise funds for Havens Hospices, a local charity providing specialist care and support for those with complex or incurable conditions.
Atlantic Pacific Directors, Ashley and Christine Nicholls, were among the guests at the pre-launch event on July 8th, where they posed alongside artist Neil Fendell and Sarah Nash from Ipeco, another event sponsor, proudly displaying their penguin.
The trail promises not only a boost for local tourism and community engagement but also much-needed support for a worthy cause. For those heading out to explore, keep an eye out for “Sunny Southpole-on-Sea” — a cheerful reminder of Southend’s creativity and community spirit.
